pictures

Class begins tomorrow, and I probably won't have as much time when studies are underway, so today I carried my camera out with me. Here are a few pics of my neighborhood and some of the highlights of my walk to college and city centre.

This is my street. I put in a little arrow to my door. I'm on the ground floor of that house right there. That's not my window to the right of the door. Mine looks on the garden in the back. It's a nice quiet place to be, and it's close enough to the city that I can walk to campus.

This is a bridge across the canal that separates Rathmines (where I live) from Dublin. As you can see, today is one of our four sunny days per year. And I almost wouldn't be surprised to find it raining when I go back out of my apartment tonight.

This is a view from that bridge looking west at the canal.

And one more shot of the canal at a particularly picturesque spot. This isn't along my normal route, but I walked over here to get a picture anyway.

Here's a little problem we have. The canal has eroded out from under the roots of a tree and caused it to fall. I've been putting rocks on the bank since I've been here to measure the erosion rate, and by my calculations, I'm afraid the canal will wash Dublin away by 2051. And what's worse, it will completely wash away Old Ashville Road by early May of 3597. So, Gregg, I need you to call Dublin's Transportation Authority to get this fixed. Also, a sign fell on me while I was walking by, Gregg. Could you mention that to them while you've got them on the phone? Here's a number:

+353 1 6707444

***OK, that whole last part was a joke for Gregg and for all the Greggheads out there. It would take too long to explain for too little result. Just to be clear, no signs fell on me, and I didn't do the rock measurement thing.***

Moving on. One more picture for today, and it's the view from the front of my college. Sorry for the bad lighting. I really should have taken this a little earlier. I don't know what that spire is called or what it's doing there. That building to the right with the columns is the Examination Hall. I hope I don't actually have to take exams in there because that seems a little intimidating. Behind the Exam Hall and to the left is the Old Library where the Book of Kells is kept. I'd love to show you pictures of those (the library and the book), but they wouldn't let me take any photos in there. Those things are what keep the tourists coming to my school day after day. I'm sure Google can help you out if you want to know/see more.

Well, I'm off to the gym for the evening. Hope you guys enjoy these. I'll put up a few more later this week.

Yeah, I just put that picture in there because erosion near roads drives Gregg crazy. Just like NASA does.

And I'd almost rather you think I was doing crazy tests with rocks than see how poorly lit (or poorly timed, I guess) most of these pictures are. There's no excuse for that considering how many puppy photo shoots I participated in over the last year and a half.
